NEVAHDLESS
THE LAST DRAGON (3.5 blunts out of 5)
Some people rhyme like it's a walk in the park. Some people rhyme like it's the last and only thing they have left in them. Nevahdless stands somewhere between both, and God help the industry should he lean to either side. His name rings bells in the underground circuit, and his long-awaited LP, The Last Dragon,breathes fire. We're not talking Puff the Magic Dragon, we're talking Dungeons & Dragons. Through the help of strong family ties with Realm Z, and guest appearances from other hungry and talented artists (X of TDP, Napalm Federation, Lowz da Rippa, O.M.I.S., and others), this effort carries braveheart status as a genuine bangin release. The production of tracks like Ridiculous, featuring X of TDP, No Boundariez, and Rainy Dayz could rotate competitively on mixtapes nationwide. His tightest effort is the underground classic, Grab Yo Neck. Even the intro of this LP draws you to listen, as he runs through excerpts of the movie and then hits you with heavy sounds that could raise the dead from gravel pits with Inside and Outside. Nevahdless is relentless and aggressive, and most of the tracks sound like he's abandoned any and all restrictions of himself. Far From Basic, featuring P-Dox stomper Rugged Son, is an ill track that just feels like two pitbulls in a cage with a human. Still, even with all the accolades, the album does lack mass appeal. In this day and age where the business is about selling music, you can't carry the underground mentality at all times. Even though the album showcases lyrical supremacy, the subject matter is mostly hip-hop, blunts, and broadway. With the exception of Rainy Dayz, the album is one-dimensional, which is far from Nevah's capabilities. The production and mood, though dark, is kick-ass basement level hip-hop from beginning to end, and Nevah's made himself a target to be closely watched. I don't think he'd want it any other way.
